Global Forest Crisis

Forests hold about 80% of the world's land biodiversity, with over 60,000 tree species. More than 1 billion people rely on forests for food, shelter, energy, and income. Deforestation continues at an alarming rate—1.95 billion acres lost annually, contributing 12–20% of global greenhouse gases.

These UN numbers remind us of forests' importance. They reflect both the lush forests of the past and the devastation caused by deforestation, as well as reforestation efforts.

       Impact of Deforestation

The biggest impact of forest loss is millions of species losing their habitat, leading many to extinction. Reduced forest area also affects climate. Without tree cover, soil dries quickly, water cycles slow, and greenhouse gases increase, accelerating global warming.

Forests in China

In terms of total area and stock, China's forestry looks good, but deforestation and degradation remain. Research shows 1.17 million ha of forest are lost annually, mainly due to over-harvesting. In the upper Yangtze, logging reduced forest cover from 30–40% at China's founding to about 10% in 1998.
